This article does a nice job of hinting at where 3D printing is heading.
To date the computer age has largely been focused on the digitisation of knowledge – text, images, sound etc. The emergence of 3D printing into the mainstraim represents a whole new epoch – namely the digitisation of matter. As matter becomes digitised the rules of the game change significantly. The rules relating to the worlds of analogue manufacturing and distribution will progressively (sometimes very rapidly) be replaced by the rules of digital manufacturing and distribution. Because it’s still in the earliest stages of development, there’s a templation to see 3D printing as little more than an interesting curiosity. This article provides some very intersting hints as to the danger in that type of thinking.
